It's all for the children...

The Junior Charity League of Concord is an organization of women committed to promoting compassion and volunteerism in Cabarrus County. All of the League’s projects and programs encourage the well-being of children and families, providing services that help them to succeed in life.

Founded in 1930 by the late Mariam C. Schramm, the League’s original focus was providing soup, crackers and milk to hungry children in the local schools. The League introduced and sponsored, with the American Red Cross, courses in baby care for expectant mothers, and also established a speech therapy clinic. In 1967, Safety Town, a program that teaches kindergarteners about safety issues, was introduced. In 1973, the Goodtimers program was established to entertain and lift the spirits of residents at local nursing homes.

Although community needs have changed throughout the years, League members continue to carry out our mission of providing necessary resources to help children to learn and to grow up healthy.

Since 1973, The Mariam C. Schramm Clothing Room has been the League’s primary service program, providing new clothing for economically disadvantaged students in Cabarrus County Schools and Kannapolis City Schools. To date for the 2009-2010 Clothing Room year, the League has provided warm clothing -- including winter coats, shoes and toiletries -- to more than 1,450 students.

Today the Junior Charity League is a thriving organization of volunteers including professional women, homemakers and business owners with the common goal of assisting local children.
