Safety Town Our 2011 Session is Currently Full.
Safety Town, begun in 1967, is one of the
League’s most cherished programs, as well as a Concord tradition. Safety Town
has been helping Cabarrus County’s rising kindergarten students learn
age-appropriate safety rules. Police officers, area nurses, firefighters and
volunteers from the Red Cross help us to teach the children about bus safety,
bike rules, fire safety, water safety, stranger danger and good eating habits
and hygiene. Safety Town runs two days during the summer, with each child
attending a one-day session.
During the half-day camp, students learn
age-appropriate safety rules as well as enjoy snacks and recreation. The
students are placed in small groups and rotate among the classes taught by local
safety professionals. Students are given handouts and treat bags that reaffirm
what they have learned.
Safety Town is held every year during the second
week of August at Coltrane-Webb Elementary School. All enrolled rising
kindergarten students from Cabarrus County Schools and Concord private schools
are given an invitation which is included in their kindergarten registration
information packs. Last year, we invited over 1,700 students. The League
volunteers work as leaders, keeping students in groups and moving them through
various stations. Each summer, approximately 300 students participate in Safety
Town.
