The Mariam Coltrane Schramm Clothing Room

The Mariam Coltrane Schramm Clothing Room, begun in 1973, provides new, stylish school clothes to impoverished students in Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City Schools.

Due to the economic downturn recently experienced throughout our community, the need for assistance has grown tremendously. Over the years, the League has been fortunate to be able to improve both the quality of and the amount of clothing each child receives.

The children visit the Clothing Room where they are allowed to "shop" for NEW clothing. Our policy is to leave all of the tags on the clothing so that the children are aware that they are receiving new clothes, similar to what other students are wearing at school.

Guidance counselors and teachers refer the children to the Clothing Room where our volunteers work with them to choose a pair of sweatpants, a pair of jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, a tee shirt, a sweatshirt, a warm winter coat, a pair of shoes, two pairs of socks, underwear, and a generously filled toiletry bag. During the fall of 2006, we clothed 1,020 children--all by volunteers!

The Clothing Room is typically open from October through January (closed in December) Monday through Friday, 9am to 12pm. Four or five league volunteers are on duty to help with the selections and fitting.
